Encouraging Participation during a Positive Climate Discussion

Look For

As you watch this video, look for how the trainer:

  • Gives a participant the opportunity to describe a CLASS concept in her own words
  • Encourages participants to highlight relevant information in their CLASS manuals
The trainer also:

  • Affirms a participant’s answer
  • Gives insight into her training style in a light-hearted manner
  • Shows enthusiasm for the CLASS tool

Activities

Think
What are some ways you can tell that teachers and children respect each other? How do the relationships in a classroom affect learning?

Read
Read the blog post Miss Matters of CLASS on Positive Climate for ideas on how to discuss this dimension with participants.

Practice
Next time you have a chance to observe children with their parents or other caregivers, note what it looks like when an adult’s affect matches the child’s. Practice describing to yourself or to a coworker what that looks like in your own words.
