Expanding on Contingent Responding

Look For

As you watch this video, look for how the trainer:

  • Uses an in-the-moment example
  • Explains a behavioral marker in her own words and using simple language
  • Reiterates the definition using more complex language to tie it back to the CLASS Manual

The trainer also:

  • Makes eye contact with participants and addresses them directly

Activities

Think
Have you ever participated in a conversation and noticed a lack of contingent responding from your conversational partner? How did it make you feel, and how did it affect the quality of the conversation?

Read
Read the blog post What’s Contingent Responding All About, Anyway? for more insight into this behavioral marker.

Practice
Go online and watch 10 minutes of a political or academic debate. When the moderator asks a question, note whether the debate participant responds contingently or not. It may be helpful to write down the point of the question and the point of the answer and note whether they match. What was the effect of the noncontingent responses on the debate and your experience of it?
