Webinar: The Impact of Trauma on Behavior: Seeing Children's Actions As Communication

When children experience trauma, it can lead them to behave in ways that challenge us as educators. How can we see these behaviors and be curious? What would it mean to shift our perspective from asking, “what’s wrong with the child?” to “what happened to this child?” Especially now, at a moment when families, children, and teachers are more likely to experience exceptional levels of stress, our ability to interpret behavior as communication and respond appropriately is essential.

In this webinar, Jimmy Venza, P.h.D. and Amber Ricks, Psy.D. of The Lourie Center for Children’s Social and Emotional Wellness will discuss how traumatic experiences can impact children’s behavior and what we can do as educators to support children. We’ll explore ways in which you can observe and understand these behaviors as forms of communication and appropriately respond.

Jimmy Venza, P.h.D.

Dr. James Venza serves as executive director of The Lourie Center for Children's Social & Emotional Wellness. Dr. Venza provides strategic direction for the Lourie Center's core programs: The Parent-Child Clinical Services Program; Lourie Center School; Therapeutic Nursery Program; and Early Head Start Program.

Dr. Venza joined the Lourie Center in 2003 to complete his postdoctoral training in the Therapeutic Nursery and Parent-Child Clinical Services programs.

Sarah Hadden, Senior Advisor, Training and Professional Development | Sarah is an educator with 30 years of experience in the field. She has been a classroom teacher, a researcher, and a teacher educator. Prior to joining Teachstone, Sarah worked on the development and implementation of the first CLASS-based professional development programs (MyTeaching Partner and the National Center for Research on Early Childhood Education) at the Center for Advanced Studies on Teaching and Learning at the University of Virginia.
