Most parents, teachers, and children would agree—there is something special about story time. I can recall the thrill I felt at seven years old, sitting on the primary-colored carpet of my elementary school’s library, listening intently as the school librarian read us *The Widow’s Broom* or *Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.* Some of my fondest memories include my mom reading me passages from *The Secret Garden* before bedtime, or my dad curling up on the couch with me to read *Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing,* or my absolute favorite, *Curious George.*

Para mí, lo mejor de leer libros era poder identificarme con los personajes, ¡y lo sigo haciendo! Cuando mis padres o maestros conectaron directamente el libro con mi vida, los conflictos de las historias se volvieron reales. Sentí una mayor empatía por los personajes e imaginé qué podría hacer en circunstancias similares. Ahora que llevo varios años estudiando la herramienta CLASS, me he dado cuenta de que lo que me encantaba de la lectura de niña estaba relacionado con las interacciones relacionadas con la dimensión de Desarrollo de Conceptos: las conexiones con el mundo real.

## **Creando conexiones con el mundo real a través de historias**

El desarrollo de conceptos puede ser una dimensión difícil de integrar para los docentes en su día a día; implica brindar a los niños oportunidades para un pensamiento complejo. Puede parecer abrumador, pero la buena noticia es que leerles cuentos a los niños casi siempre les brinda oportunidades para ayudarlos a conectar los conceptos de los libros con sus propias vidas. Para que el aprendizaje sea más vívido para los niños, los docentes pueden planificar preguntas que los animen a conectar los conceptos del cuento con su mundo. Casi todos los libros contienen un conflicto o concepto central que los niños deben considerar en sus propias vidas.

## **Cómo animar a los niños a hacer conexiones**

Aquí hay algunas preguntas que puede hacer para que los niños establezcan estas conexiones importantes:

- ¿Cómo te sentirías si esto te pasara a ti?
- ¿Te ha pasado algo parecido en la vida? ¿Qué hiciste?
- Si esto sucediera en la escuela ¿qué harías al respecto?
- ¿Cómo crees que se siente el personaje? Cuéntame sobre alguna vez que te hayas sentido así.
- ¿Has estado alguna vez en un lugar así? ¿Cómo era?

Establecer conexiones con el mundo real es importante. No solo porque es un indicador del desarrollo de conceptos, sino también porque puede fomentar el amor por el aprendizaje durante años. ¡Soy la prueba viviente de ello!
